Tier I

Matilda gains a set amount of max Eureka. At the start of the round, Matilda gains Eureka. When allies deplete Eureka, accumulate [Inspiration]. When entering battle, accumulate a set amount of [Inspiration]. Depletes a certain amount of Eureka after casting [Ingenious Etude] and [Under the Spotlight], increasing the Crit Rate of this turn's [Improvised Incantation]. If this [Improvised Incantation]'s [Inspiration] stacks reaches a certain number, its Crit DMG increases as well.
- [Inspiration]: Depleting Eureka will cause [Inspiration] to accumulate. At the start of the round, accumulated [Inspiration] will be distributed among basic incantations.
- [Improvised Incantation]: Casting an incantation with [Inspiration] adds an [Improvised Incantation] to the end of the spell queue which attacks enemies. This incantation's [Inspiration] stacks are factored into this [Improvised Incantation].

Tier II

After casting [Ingenious Etude] and [Under the Spotlight] depletes Eureka, if this [Improvised Incantation]'s [Inspiration] stacks reaches a certain number of stacks, its Crit DMG increases.

Tier III

After casting [Fleeting Revelation], adds a number of [Inspiration] to this round's [Improvised Incantation] and additionally increases Crit Rate. If [Inspiration] reaches a certain number of stacks, Crit DMG increases as well.

Tier IV

After casting [Fleeting Revelation], if this turn's [Improvised Incantation] reaches a certain number of [Inspiration] stacks, it is guaranteed to crit.

Review

Matilda is a crit-oriented character, but her kit doesn’t work much in her favor. She needs to be constantly on a buffed state and have her skill “Ingenious Étude” on level 2 or above to use as an opener in order to make the best use of her potential.

Matilda can be a decent enough Damage Dealer in the early game, but the farther in the game, the more her kit plays against her. Her passives don’t really add anything noticeable, her multipliers are on the lower side, she needs too much set up, and a team built around her to do anything at all. On top of that, her critical technique is below most other critical oriented characters, making it harder for her to get consistent on her critical hits.

Most of these weaknesses could be attenuated if she had access to her Portrays. If you still wish to use her despite all this, she can still fill a sub-DPS and support-ish role by applying Confusion with an innovative Étude. Or you can experiment using her alongside buffers, as Matilda can already fill the role of applying the Confusion debuff herself.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Free character, obtainable through the mail in-game after stage 1-4;
Crit-oriented, and can apply [Confusion] by herself, opening more room for team comps.
Ultimate can be powerful if it lands a critical hit.

Cons

Currently, there's no way to upgrade her Portray; (Gets one free by logging in during patch 1.9)
Below average base critical technique for a crit-oriented character;
Can be difficult to set up in order to deal damage, being below average most of the time.
