Borgne is a DPS through and through. He is very straightforward, and all he wants to do is deal damage (with a side of Dispel). First of all, Borgne’s passive states that he cannot deal any Critical hits, no matter what. Secondly, it increases his Max HP by 560% of his attack, which makes him especially tanky for a damage dealer. Then, 30% of his (now boosted) Max HP is added to all of his attacks.

His S3 has a very high multiplier, starting at an AOE equal to 480% of his attack, and deals an extra 100% damage for every enemy that is defeated by that skill, for a total of up to 780% damage. His ultimate also dispels 1 buff from every target. Considering his high HP as a DPS, it is also important to note that his S1, which you will be using a lot, heals 60% HP of the damage dealt.

Overall, early on, he works really well as he doesn't need much to scale - since you don't need to build crit on him, just ATK%. Still, this is also a con as he's missing out on anything crit related (Shells, Modules, and buffs), so once other DPS obtain what they need, they can easily catch up to him and even overcome him.

Due to his straightforwardness in the kit, buffing his damage is all you need for him to perform well. Through Skill CD decrease from Tsukiyo Mi and Lily, and damage buffs from units like Freya and DokiDoki, Borgne will be dealing a lot of damage.

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Deals quite a lot of damage.

  • Very tanky for a DPS.

  • Can selfheal, which makes him very hard to kill.

Cons

  • Can't crit, which limits his Shell and Module options,

  • It also prevents him from benefiting from Crit scaling - early on, he will feel insanely strong, but the more gear your Crit DPS will get on their gear, the further he will fall behind.

Best Build

The builds below are tailored more toward PVE and we only mention PVP in some places - like for alternative Shells or Module choices. But PVE is our focus.

Best Shells

For some DPS characters, we're showing two set of numbers. The top one on shows the performance in single-target scenario and the bottom on blue background in AoE scenario (4 targets). If there's just one number, it means the character only has single-target capability.

After the main body acts, it performs a [Follow-up Attack] on the primary target, dealing 2 instances of 110% damage each. If a [CRIT] occurs, it increases the main body Animus’s [CRIT DMG] by 10%, up to a maximum of 8 stacks.

Consistent option for most DPS characters when it comes to raw damage output. Deals 2 sizable hits on a 3 turn cooldown and grants a relatively quickly stacking buff amounting to 60% CRIT DMG once fully charged. Also has more flexible DPS matrixes than other options thanks to it possessing 12P Swiftrush.

White Fang is a strong generic option for Borgne despite him not gaining anything from its CRIT DMG buff. This is because the Matrix on it are a little more suitable for Borgne than other Striker Shells available and both hits of White Fang each apply his 30% HP multiplier Passive.

After the main body's turn, a Follow-up Attack on the main target dealing 240%+4200 damage, applies [SPD+] for 3 turns to the main Animus, applies and increases their Turn Meter by 25%.

A speed-based alternative for DPS characters to use instead of the mostly pure damage setups offered by Striker shells. Deals a large hit of damage, grants a 25% gauge boost, and offers the wearer the [SPD+] boost with 100% uptime on use. The downside of using this shell on DPS is that the matrixes are mostly support-focused, leading to suboptimal 12/8/6 set-ups or causing you to break sets and run 12P Swiftrush and an 8P set of your choice. Despite this downside, it can still be some characters’ top option. As with all speed-based sets on DPS, in teams that have gauge boosts for the DPS, it will lose value. Also, loses most of its value when used in teams that already have a team member granting the [SPD+] buff with good uptime.

When you don't already have an SPD buff on the team, Jackal Guard is one of Borgne's best options despite not specifically being a DPS shell. The SPD bonus, Advance, decently sized hit and the fact that Borgne has trouble taking full advantage of most offensive-focused Matrix Sets due to his inability to land a Critical Hit all result in this Shell being a top option for him in fights where he has a chance to cycle through multiple rotations.

Best Module Sets:

  • 12 set:
    Matrix
    Swiftrush [12/12]
    >
  • 8 set:
    Matrix
    Harvest [8/8]
    >
    Matrix
    Onslaught [8/12]
    >
  • 6 set: None - the optimal set combo requires you to use a 8-pc/12-pc set not present on the shell, so you have no place for a 6 PC Inferno set.
PVP Setup

Below you can find some alternative setups you can use, but only in PVP.

1

When this Animus takes action, selects the enemy with the lowest HP percentage (prioritizing Boss) and deals 180% damage to the target, increasing their No.1 hit of damage taken in this turn by 50%.

The top option for most Animus that deal the majority of their damage in singular hits and who can align their S3 with Tiger Yin's 3 turn cooldown. Also usable by Animus that don't align with Tiger Yin's cooldown in short fights where one S3 is all that really matters.

Tiger Yin is probably the most used version of Borgne right now in its Turn 2 tanky version. It does a lot of burst DMG, is really tanky and can be very good against Cleave.

Best Module Sets:

  • 12 set:
    Matrix
    Bloodbath [12/12]
    >
  • 8 set:
    Matrix
    Harvest [8/8]
    >
  • 6 set:
    Matrix
    Swiftraid [6/6]

2

Before the owner takes action, deals 2 hit(s) of 100% +2500 damage to the target with the highest ATK and extends the duration of non-control debuffs inflicted by the owner this turn by 1 turn(s) (excluding [DoT]), then increases the owner Animus's Effect ACC by 100% in the current turn.

A strong supportive option for debuff-focused characters. On use, the Shell grants 50% Effect ACC and causes any non-control and non-DoT debuffs applied during the turn it's activated to be extended by one turn. This shell also deals a non-negligible amount of damage with its 2 hits on use. A top choice for any character looking to improve uptime and accuracy for their debuffs.

Dark Moon is a tried and true classic of Borgne, the original build people made for him. It has gone a bit to the wayside since Tiger Yin, but if you want Borgne for more specific purposes like dealing with Liliams in Law or killing on a squishy unit with a SPD version, then it's a very good choice still.

For the pure Turn 1 Borgne gamers, we have the White Fang option to output pretty solid AoE plus single-target damage, as his very high ATK% makes the Follow-up damage scale very high. Best option for high SPD, high DMG Borgne.

Stat comments

Borgne has four stats to pay attention to across gear:

  • ATK% / ATK: The primary way to scale Borgne's damage is by stacking as much ATK as possible. Borgne cannot CRIT, but instead he gains both HP% and ATK% multipliers for each of his abilities (his HP% passive also gets added to Shells that hit enemies). As a split scale,r you might be tempted to mix in HP% as well as ATK for Borgne's build, but due to Borgne's passive which grants him 500% of his ATK at the start of battle as FLAT HP for the fight this isn't efficient. Maxing out ATK works towards contributing to all of his kit and shells damage multipliers at once instead of only doing one or the other.
  • SPD: When you're not stacking more ATK than you not what to do with you should focus the rest of your attention on SPD as it's the only other efficient way to scale Borgne's damage, allowing him to loop faster thus dealing higher DPS. As the harder to stat to acquire than ATK it should take priority on gear that has it available.
  • Effect ACC: Borgne's ultimate is capable of dispelling buffs from targets with 100% base chance. In endgame this wont be guaranteed to hit without some Effect ACC, but don't focus on the stat at the cost ATK or SPD. This stat is completely optional.
  • HP% / HP: If you're looking for more ways to power up your Borgne HP and HP% while not as good as ATK or SPD will boost Borgne's damage and survivability albeit less than the other stats.
Stat comments (PVP)

Borgne has two ways to play him. First, as a turn 1 stripper+ Damage Dealer similar to Senyu and Second being, a big HP tank with good AoE damage, both builds are quite good.

  • Main Stats:
    • SPD: Speed is still king, even on someone like Borgne; you want him to have as much as you can give, regardless of what build.
    • ATK%: As much ATK as you can manage, no other stats matter.

Passive comments
  • Slot 1: ATK% is optimal, but if you're lacking in materials Flat ATK can also be used.
  • Slot 2: Best in slot option in this slot for Borgne.
  • Slot 3: Odd DMG% is optimal, but if you're lacking in materials generic DMG% can also be used.

Comments

All of Borgne's Skill ups are valuable, but when playing him with a focus on damage first, we recommend targeting his Skill 2 first to max out the HP% multiplier applied to his abilities and hit-based Shells. After that, both his Skill 3 and Skill 1 are viable next best choices, depending on whether you value Sustain (Skill 1) or more damage from a reduced Ultimate cooldown (Skill 3).
