Beginner's Guide
Persona 5: The Phantom X is a turn-based RPG spinoff of Persona 5. While it retains similarities to the original game’s combat system, P5X expands on it with greater variety in team compositions and strategic options.
TEAM COMPOSITION
P5X Teams are primarily composed of Wonder paired with three other characters and one Navigator.
When you have characters or Personas of the same attribute, they can trigger Harmony, which boosts the skill damage of the activated attribute. Therefore, during battle, when Wonder switches Personas, it can affect which Harmony is triggered depending on the attribute of the active Persona.
DOWN GAUGE AND KNOCKDOWN
In P5X, some enemies (and your party) use a Down Gauge system for preventing Knockdowns. The Shield icon next to the enemy’s HP indicates how many times they must be hit with an attribute they are weak to or with a Sword/Gun Critical Hit before they can be Knockdowned. For example, if the number is 2, they must be hit twice to break the Shield, then one more time to be Knockdowned.
ELEMENTS, 1 MORE AND ALL-OUT ATTACK
Every character in this game, as well as enemies you encounter have specific attribute Resistances and Weaknesses. Interactions with these attributes can be categorized as:
- WEAK - The enemy is vulnerable to this attribute. They will take increased damage from the attack, and will reduce the Down Gauge/Knockdown the enemy. Landing a Critical Hit with Physical or Gun Attribute will always reduce the Down Gauge/Knockdown the enemy.
- RESIST - The enemy is resistant to this attribute. They will take decreased damage from any attacks of this attribute. Landing a Critical Hit with Physical or Gun Attribute will always reduce the Down Gauge/Knockdown the enemy, even if they resist it.
- NULL - The enemy is immune to this attribute. Any attack of this attribute will deal no damage at all.
- REPEL - The enemy reflects this attribute. Any attack of this attribute will bounce back, dealing damage to the attacker instead.
- ABSORB - The enemy absorbs this attribute. Instead of taking damage, they will recover HP when hit by this attribute.
These are additional explanations to certain mechanics related to attributes/elements:
- 1 MORE - When you successfully Knockdown an enemy, it will trigger 1 MORE. In this game, it functions more like a bonus attack rather than an extra turn. Each character can only use their 1 MORE attack once per round.
- All-Out-Attack - When all enemies are Knocked-down, you can launch an All-Out-Attack, dealing damage to all enemies. The total damage increases based on how many allies participate. In this game, you can initiate an All-Out-Attack even if the Protagonist is unavailable.
SPEED AND TURNS
The Speed stat in this game functions more linearly. It's mostly used to determine the turn order within your team and how frequently your character can Dodge enemy attacks. Having high amounts of Speed doesn't grant you additional actions; characters with Extra Turn mechanics can act more than once.
SWEEP
Material Stages in this game don’t have a sweep function, but they do include a feature that lets you claim multiple sets of rewards from a single clear—up to 5x the rewards, if you have enough stamina.
CHARACTERS
Every character in this game has a main element or attribute, but their skill set often includes a mix of other elements or skill types. Characters are also divided into distinct classes based on their roles (Names below are translation from Chinese used by community and might not be the same as the ones during official release):
- Rebel – Single-target DPS
- Domination – AoE DPS
- Vanguard – Tank
- Superior – Buffer support
- Submit – Debuffer support
- Elucidate – Off-field support, you may know them as Navigators
STATS
- Attack – Increases the damage and effectiveness of most skills. The majority of characters scale with this stat.
- Defense – Decreases incoming damage. Some characters scale with this stat.
- HP – Increases your character’s Max HP. Certain characters scale with Max HP.
- Damage Bonus – Increases Damage Dealt.
- Effect Hit Rate – Increases the chance of inflicting various debuffs.
- Critical Rate – Chance of landing Critical Hits.
- Critical Damage – Increases the damage of Critical Hits.
- Speed – Determines your order in the round, certain characters scale with Speed.
- SP Regen % – Increases SP recovered from items and certain skills.
- Penetration % – When dealing damage, ignore certain % of enemy Defense. Applies before Defense Down debuffs.
ARCANA CARDS
Arcana Cards are another type of equipment in this game that serves the function of Armor and Accessories in a traditional RPG game, unlike Persona 5, where only one Armor and Accessory slot was available.
Equipping Arcana Cards to your character will provide them with a variety of stat increases, such as HP, Attack, Speed, etc. These will provide your characters with the main bulk of their stat increases.

GAME MODES
There are primarily seven game modes present in P5X. Four casual ones — Heart Rail, Tycoon, Tartarus, and Velvet Trials, and three endgame ones — Sea of Souls Trials, Door of Nightmares, and Astrolabe Trials. Some might not be available from the start in the English version.
GACHA
There are four types of banners: the Permanent Banner includes all Permanent characters; Limited Rate-up Banners feature a Limited 5★ character for a set time; Rerun Banners bring back Limited characters and usually last longer; and Super Rerun Banners appear on special occasions, letting you choose up to 3 characters as Rate-up. character banners use two pity systems: one guarantees the Rate-up 5★ after a high pity count with a lower base rate, and the other is 50/50 chance between the Rate-up and a Permanent 5★ on a lower pity count with a higher base rate and providing a Guaranteed Rate-up on the next pity if lost.
