The extra damage from Baelran's Sanctified Surge can also reduce the max HP of non-boss enemies by 70% of the damage dealt. This max HP reduction cannot exceed 40% of the target's max HP or 800% of Baelran's ATK, whichever is lower. Review

Baelran is a S-Rank Celestial Tank with a massive health pool, high ramping damage, healing synergy and Hyper-carry potential. He requires high Single Target heals to actually get good use out of his kit.

His Ultimate, Celestial Rise, has a passive and an active state.

The Passive is that at the start of battle, Baelran gains a big shield, and quadruples his max HP. When he is healed to that inflated max HP value, he deals high damage in an arc and enters Celestial form. In Celestial form all his attacks deal damage in an arc.

The Active effect allows Baelran to deal damage in a big arc, and restore HP based on the damage.

His first skill, Sanctified Surge, is a passive skill that heals him every second, and passively increases his damage in Celestial Form.

His second skill, Wrath Cleave, is a simple CC skill that Knocks-down enemies in an area in front of him.

Now, for a quick overview of his performance in the various game modes:
  • Story and AFK stages – Baelran survives just fine using a dedicated healing team, but he does not have the damage to kill the enemies on his own, especially if they have any kind of healing. This can be offset somewhat by including Shemira or Smokey in the team. We can also run a hybrid team built around the Eironn-Ulmus combo, but with Rowan and Hewynn to support Baelran instead, though at this point Baelran is not strictly necessary for the team and we could do just fine with a traditional full CC team.

  • Dream Realm –  While Baelran’s damage being based on his own HP scales just fine for PVP, that is not the case for Dream Realm, Baelran is virtually unusable, as his abilities giving him an extra couple million damage does not matter at all when Endless boss damage is measured in double digit billions.

  • PVP – Baelran is very close to meta viability in PVP. When paired with Rowan and Reinier, he has just enough initial healing to sustain himself for the rest of the match with his own Life-gain abilities and passive Regen, and the damage he dishes out can nuke an entire team in a big arc.

    • He can also survive hits from Assassins such as Athalia when fully supported.

    • Baelran does have some hard counters, for example Dunlingr’s Curelock, and any map that makes Reinier positioning unreliable, as that makes it harder to make sure all the buffs land on him. Most Dionel Teams at equivalent or higher Paragon level will kill him before he gets going, and even Kulu can just stop him in his tracks.

    • He is not the type of hero you can splash into any team, similar to the aforementioned Dionel in that he works best as a Hyper-carry whale hero, and that limits his flexibility.

Investment
  • Legendary+ gives him some Haste.

  • Mythic+ greatly improves his Ultimate, making him permanently unaffected on cast and gaining an extra attack that calls down lightning on nearby enemies.

  • At EX+15 he also dispels all debuffs on himself and permanently increases his Attack, and also increases the damage of his extra lightning strike attack.

  • Supreme+ gives his first Skill an effect that reduces enemy max HP in AFK stages and PVP. It has a different effect on bosses, causing them to lose HP when he uses this skill.

The minimum viable investment for AFK stages is Mythic+, and for PVP it is advisable to upgrade him all the way to Supreme+, or Paragon parity with the rest of your team if you have unlocked Paragon levels.

His EX weapon does not need to be upgraded much, but he does get a significant jump at EX +15.

Conclusion

Baelran is a PVP Hyper-carry for whales, who can be a valuable extra tool against slower teams, but is not without hard counters. Pull for him if you want an additional option to keep up with the PVP rock-paper-scissors meta, otherwise he is safe to skip if you don’t care much about PVP.

Cons

  • Only really excels in PVP scenarios.

  • Can be hard countered by many different teams.

  • Requires high investment.

  • Needs a team built around him for best results.

EX Investment

Since the

Temporal Essence
Temporal Essence
and
Twilight Essence
Twilight Essence
are very hard to obtain, you have to be really careful with the using them to upgrade the EX weapon. And in this guide we ordered all characters by the priority when it comes to how much they need investment in their EX weapon to work well and where should you stop to get the best bang for your buck.

Color explanation:

  • +X - where every character starts,
  • +X - the next step that you should do when investing into that character - for some characters this will be enough,
  • +X - the final step you should do when investing into that character - you can go beyond that later though once you have the Essences to spare.
