An OG character with proven PvE and PvP potential, but why is she dead now? You might wonder.

Let's cut this explanation short. First of all, Scarlet is still a good single-target damager. The problem? Her base damage is very weak compared to the current meta units, and she isn't as scalable—most of her DPS comes from overbuffing herself, which is bad hygiene (in our dictionary). She also hurts herself, which adds pressure and forces players to bring healers, which is unoptimal. While she can still do bossing, especially in Electric-weak, and offers screen-clearing support (good for projectiles), she just doesn't have the same oomph as she did before. To address that, ShiftUp releases a new unit made exclusively for her, Trina. With Trina, Scarlet's single-target damage becomes mathematically reliable again but still not enough to become "considerable" for Neutral. Her impact in Electric-weak also remains to be seen.

How about mobbing? For this very purpose, Scarlet is still usable. This is because screenwipes don't get diluted by the number of hostiles—unlike ShiftUp's new developer-favorite Sequential Attack(s). Not only that, Scarlet's inherent high ATK buff allows her to cruise through High Deficit Campaign (in the correct element + with the correct supports) and negate stat penalty from CP deficit. She is still good in this regard, and Trina also helps reinforce this, albeit to a lesser extent. There is one problem, though—there are better Campaign bruteforcers than her. Unless you have those units, Scarlet may still be beneficial for you, especially in Electric-weak.

How about PvP? This is where Scarlet's reign hasn't been undermined (yet). As a screenwiper with lots of self ATK buffs + counter-attack skill, Scarlet is one of the best units in PvP. Having Scarlet in PvP is like having a cheat code. She counters a lot of teams and units. SGs? Counter them with counter-attack to death. MGs/SMGs? Even worse than SGs, they die faster attacking a protected Scarlet. What about sniping her quickly because she likes killing herself? Trina solves that problem and even makes her Burst stronger. Oh, and with Jackal—who provides Instant Damage Sharing—killing Scarlet becomes impossible if you don't have the right units to counter her. And even then, those counter units are specific to PvPs, like Rosanna!

Review
Pros

  • Usable in Bossing and Campaign albeit powercrept, esp. with Trina.

  • God in PvP.

  • Lots of ATK buffs to counter stat penalty (from CP deficit) & high-DEF enemies.

  • Has a strong screenwipe.

  • High burst gen for an AR.

  • Damage is mostly from basic attacks for bossing; high synergy with Core Damage and good for destroying parts.

  • Not manual-heavy; boomer-friendly; just hold-and-point.

  • Very good synergy with Jackal in PvP.

  • Good synergy with SAnis, who provides Reload Speed.

Cons

  • But, there is someone stronger than Scarlet that SAnis can buff (*cough* Cindy *cough*).

  • Not much presence anymore because there are many units better than her even in her own element.

  • Not scalable—damage comes from overbuffing self, not high basic-attack/skill multipliers.

  • Hurts herself continuously, creating slot pressure and forcing the deployment of healers, which is unoptimal.

  • Reloads take 100 years unless you pair her with Reload Speed buffers.

  • ARs' hit accuracy isn't as good as MGs, SRs, and RLs, affecting her performance in Campaign.

  • Requires Trina to be relevant in the modern meta.

  • May require Trina/Jackal to avoid dying too quickly in PvP.

Investment Tips

Skill Investment

Here's the explanation for all the numbers and colors used in the guide:

  • 10/5/7 means upgrading Skill 1 to lvl 10, Skill 2 to lvl 5, and Burst Skill to lvl 7,
  • Yellow means the immediate investment when u get the unit. There are 3 reasons for this:
    • If the unit is Meta or High Priority, it will have a starting investment of more than 1/1/1 (such as 4/4/4) depending on what the unit provides.
    • If the unit is Medium or Low Priority, 1/1/1 will be mentioned, meaning no immediate investment is required, and you can invest in this character if you need to use it according to the priority listed.
    • If we deem that a unit does not have usable skills to be meta for any gamemode, no investment will be mentioned.
  • Blue means minimum investment to take advantage of the Nikke's skills. There are 2 reasons for this:
    • Sometimes, minimum investments are breakpoints such as for Noir or SAnis.
    • Sometimes, minimum investments are just the ideal way to progress to upgrade that unit, before moving on to Recommended and High.
  • Red means recommended investment for F2P players,
  • Purple means maximum recommended investment, in order to get the best out of the unit. You should only try to reach these investments if you have a surplus of Skill Books leftover.

More info:

  • The skill investment list below features a lot of Level 4 and 7 because they are easier to understand. Any higher levels will cost a new type of resource.
  • However, you may choose to upgrade to Level 5 if you need a stronger effect instead of 4, as the increase in Blue Manual cost from Level 4 to 5 is still low. The leap only starts from Level 6 onward.
  • There is also a leap from Level 3 to 4, so if you want to save a tiny bit of Blue Manuals, then leave at 3 instead of 4.
Gear Investment

This Overload (OL) Recommendations and Priority guide unravels in detail everything you need about a character in terms of priority, overload targets (effects), and order of acquisition, alongside some notes to explain our thinking process.

For OL targets and order of acquisition, we decided to divide the target effects into several categories.

  • Essential: With all gear combined, your unit must have the roll(s) prescribed as a minimum requirement. Example: Charge Speed on Alice. You cannot compromise on these rolls.
  • Ideal: These rolls will improve your unit's performance significantly. Aim for 2 lines of Essential/Ideal per gear for maximum performance and the best Return on Investment (ROI). If you get 3, you are lucky. You can choose to only have 1 as well to save materials. Example: Elemental Damage on Scarlet.
  • Passable: Low-priority line that has either limited value or the impact is not as strong as other rolls. Should this show up as a bonus together with a better line, you can choose to keep them. Example: Charge Speed on Red Hood.

Overload effects are ordered by importance from Left to Right, which means anything on the left provides more value than the right. Effects that belong to the same group generate too similar an impact to make a difference (and are sometimes interchangeable). Try to follow this order as faithfully as possible for maximum mileage.

Additional tips:

  • Priority (PvE/PvP) isn't necessarily lower than Priority (Universal), which has no tag/label. It just indicates that this unit performs only in select types of content.
  • If a suggested effect has the number ×2 next to it, that means you should get the effect on at least 2 gear. The same idea applies to other numbers.
  • Focus on obtaining Essential(s) then you can start worrying about optimizing your rolls. Units require these to function, and the impact is too massive to ignore.
  • If a unit has no Essential(s), that means their performance is not that dependent on OL, but they can still benefit from good effects.
  • Remember that this is just a recommendation list, and attaining perfection is impossible. You will have to make some compromise, pick whichever rolls you desire the most, and conserve as much material as possible.

Scarlet is an excellent choice for PvE, but she is at the top of the meta for PvP, where ATK is better than Elemental Damage. She scales the best with Ammo, since she only has 20 ammo and a huge reload time. Scarlet is an AR who cannot hit core shots well against enemies who are far away, hence she benefits from Crit Rolls more than others, as well as Hit Rate.

    Resilience Cube

Resilience Cube is the go-to choice for Scarlet pre-overload gear and when your Bastion Cube is still not upgraded to level 7. Post-overload though, Bastion Cube scales way better than Resilience because you can get Max Ammo as overload perk.
