Review

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • One of the only supports in the game who can group enemies effectively;

  • Fully quickswap friendly via her unique Outro skill, which funnels Energy to the incoming character;

  • One of the shortest rotations in the game by far, comparable to the top tier Sanhua;

  • Benefits a lot from her higher sequences, which greatly increase her potential, damage and buffing-wise;

  • She’s free!

Cons

  • Not having an amplification buff on her Outro skill puts her in a tough spot against hybrids and supports that do, often causing her to rely on quickswap to be comparably effective;

  • No real place in the meta, often outshined by stronger buffing options or better quickswap damage dealers;

  • Her rotations can get awkward to execute when her Ultimate is on cooldown;

  • Very reliant on her late sequences for damage, which also provide a good chunk of team buffing potential.

Review

Yangyang is a free 4-star Aero Sword Hybrid who centers around quick Concerto Energy generation and quickswap-friendliness. Much like her wind element of choice would suggest, her rotations are as fast as a gust of wind and she can swap in and out of the field quicker than the average child at their school festival’s haunted house. Extremely specific jokes aside, when you start stacking Sequences up, she starts dealing some decent damage too!

Her kit’s main point of interest is, like many other characters, her Forte Circuit. It can hold up to a maximum of 3 stacks. When charged fully, Yangyang can cast a powerful mid-air burst attack called Feather Release. It can be accessed in several ways: by using your Heavy Attack, by performing an Intro Skill, by performing a Dodge Counter, by swapping into another character mid-air, and by simply jumping, after any of which you need to perform a Basic Attack. The main and most reliable way to access this Feather Release, which we will use extensively in all of her rotations, is by jumping.

To generate those stacks, a few ways can be considered: by using her Resonance Skill, which additionally groups smaller enemies in a small radius in its center while dealing some okay damage, by using her Intro Skill, by using her last Basic Attack (which is often impractical unless you swap into her without an Intro), and lastly by using her Heavy Attack and pressing Basic Attack once afterwards. We will mostly be counting on Heavy Attacks and Resonance Skills to generate Forte stacks as they are the fastest and most reliable way to do so.

Her Ultimate is simple to understand: dealing a few hits of solid continuous damage in its rather generous radius, it groups smaller enemies in its center and generates a good chunk of Concerto Energy for her. Paired with her Heavy Attacks, her Resonance Skill and most importantly her Forte Circuit, she’s able to generate lots of Concerto Energy in extremely short time windows.

Her Outro skill is unfortunately unimpressive from a meta standpoint, but we will see it doesn’t cripple her too hard; it funnels a total of 20 Resonance Energy to the character you switched into over a period of 5s. This effect of Resonance Energy funneling is very rare and only sported by Zhezhi as of the current patch other than Yangyang.

However, it additionally has the effect of being able to trigger the Moonlit Clouds Echo set for the reliable DMG and ATK buffs it provides when you have it equipped on your Yangyang; by association, it makes her the only Hybrid buffing archetype character in the game to be fully quickswap-friendly, as none of her buffs expire upon switching like any other buffing-type Hybrids such as Sanhua, Mortefi, Zhezhi and the likes, which is the one meta niche she upholds and is unique in.

As a result, she is only to be used in quickswap-focused hypercarry teams such as along with Xiangli Yao or Changli, her two main teams, where she serves as a budget option to who will typically be Yinlin or Zhezhi. With that comes an inherent flaw though: she isn’t easy to play. You’ll need to get used to how fast Yangyang is if you truly want to justify a use for her.

On top of this, a final flaw of hers is that her S4, S5 and S6 are all really big to your team’s overall damage; if your Yangyang isn’t at least S5, it’s best to discard Yangyang as an option entirely, as she will deal insignificant damage herself, and buff your team in a rather subpar manner as she doesn’t access the 20% team-wide ATK buff her S6 provides, which is very wanted considering she doesn’t buff much to begin with.

To summarize, Yangyang is in a very unique niche in the meta. Sporting a unique Outro Skill despite her kit clearly being centered around buffing your main DPS’s damage, it would at first seem like she barely contributes anything to the team; however, her exceptionally short rotation time - one of the fastest in the entire game - paired with her fully quickswap-friendly kit are her saving grace, enabling her to slot in nicely as a quickswap attacker who can not only deal decent damage, but also buff your Main DPS quite nicely at the same time. While a difficult character to get used to, and by no means a meta one due to her lack of buffing strength, Yangyang is a surefire budget option for quickswap-friendly Hypercarry teams.

Ratings

This tier list assesses characters based on their combat potential in Wuthering Waves current most demanding content Tower of Adversity (ToA). ToA is a mode similar to Genshin Impact’s Spiral Abyss or Honkai Star Rail’s Memory of Chaos and requires multiple teams, strong Echoes and good Weapons. This mode offers a reasonable mix of Boss encounters (single target), Elite packs (2-3 targets) and AoE scenarios (5+ Targets), allowing multiple characters to find a niche but in the end, there's a bias toward single target focused characters at the top-end.

Please keep in mind Wuthering Waves is a skill-based game and each character has a different playstyle, difficulty level and even special tricks and combos. Wuthering Waves is also a team based game and it's only by combining both these factors to the highest level a character can reach optimal performance.

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 587 | CRIT DMG: 48.6%

Changli's signature weapon that's not only fantastic for her but also usable on all damage-focused Sword users who have a large portion of their damage originating from Resonance Skill damage. Offers a huge main stat of CRIT DMG% granting excellent scaling, 12% permanent ATK% and up to 56% increased Resonance Skill DMG% which should be at or close to full power during the bulk of your rotation when opening with one or two resonance skills.

100%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 587 | CRIT Rate: 24.3%

Outstanding Sword choice, offering significantly higher base damage due to its 5★ rarity, as well as a stackable ATK% buff almost every character can effortlessly get 1 stack of (but with 2 also being easily achievable by most when played correctly). Additionally has a good amount of Energy Regen, which on most characters will allow one sub-stat of Energy Regen to be allocated elsewhere to increase damage even further. Best Sword choice across the board with only S5 4★ Swords having a chance to compete with it.

84.38%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 412 | ATK: 30.3%

Exceptional all-around generic Sword gaining its bonus close to unconditionally as most Resonators almost always aim to make use of their Intro skill and very few characters spend more than 15 seconds on field during their duration.

82.76%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 462 | ATK: 18.2%

Often inferior to Commando of Conviction for DPS, this sword is still a great F2P 4* option for characters who need the energy boost. Realistically however, only consider this option over Commando of Conviction if you have energy problems on your character.

81.38%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 387 | ATK: 36.4%

Sword option for Heavy and Basic ATK users with an easy to trigger passive - with the only downside being its 10 second time limit. For characters that use their Skill multiple times per rotation, this downside is a non-issue but for Main DPS characters who take up a lot of field time and don't use their skill often this sword can lose value.

80.44%

Stats at Level 90: ATK: 412 | ATK: 30.3%

Powerful sword for Resonators spending minimal time on the field - the shorter the better. Best for Hybrid characters executing their rotation fast and infrequently, but less powerful on Main DPS characters that aim to spend extended time on field.
Best Echo Sets

Best Echo Sets show the best sets that support the main character playstyle and work out of the box while the Special Echo Sets either are situational, support an alternative playstyle or are targeted toward min-maxers. The percentage numbers showcase the relative DPS increase when you take into account the set bonus only. For some characters there's no DPS (or its equivalent) available and in that case we listed the sets in the order of priority.

Important! The 2.0 introduced quite a lot of new Echoes and we need more time to properly test out all of them (especially considering the past bugs related to them that made some stronger, some weaker). The builds below are provisional and we will be updating them over the next few days as we do our testing - so before you use all your stamina on the new Echoes, please have a bit of patience.

Best Echo Sets

1

2 Set: Energy Regen increases by 10%.

5 Set: Upon using Outro Skill, ATK of the next Resonator increases by 22.5% for 15s.

Offers a 10% unconditional Energy Regen% boost taking some pressure off your gear when aiming at ER breakpoints. Also upon using Outro, grants the next character switching in a 22.5% ATK boost, amplifying any of your main damage dealers burst windows.

Below you can find Main Echo options that you should be using with the set:

  • Echo Image
    Impermanence Heron
    - Supportive Echo that can be run at the cost of a sizeable chunk of damage for the character who equips, trading personal gain for team benefits. Should always be used and immediately switch cancelled right before performing an Outro, leading to another DPS. When done so will grant the next character switching in 12% increased DMG% which when combined with the 5P Moonlit set which also grants 22.5% ATK% under the same conditions makes for a sizeable boost. While the echo does lower the damage of whoever wears it, it grants a massive chunk of energy on use usually saving 1 or sometimes even 2 Energy Regen sub stats that may otherwise be needed by the wearer allowing for some damage to be recovered.
Special Echo Sets

2 Set: Aero DMG increase by 10%.

5 Set: Upon using Intro Skill, Aero DMG increases by 30% for 15s.

Offers a 10% unconditional Aero DMG% boost and an additional 30% Aero DMG% after using the intro lasting 15 seconds for a grand total of 40% additional Aero damage for most of your damage window.

Below you can find Main Echo options that you should be using with the set:

  • Sentry Construct
    Nightmare: Feilian Beringal
    - Offers an unconditional 12% Aero DMG and 12% Heavy Attack DMG boost when placed in the Main Echo slot, making it a solid choice for Aero focused resonators who emphasize Heavy Attack damage and are looking to use the 5P Sierra Gale set bonus.
  • Echo Image
    Feilian Beringal
    - A great pure DPS echos in the game, capable of dealing good damage while also being swap cancelled and still granting its boosting effect. Use this echo in the warm-up phase just moments before you plan to enter your Main DPS burst window and swap cancel it after it performs its first punch (it will continue and use the follow-up even after you switch). After that trigger your Hybrid or Supports concerto and then swap back to your damage dealer to perform your rotation with the buff active.

Best Endgame Stats (Level 90)

Important! CRIT DMG has base value of 150% and Energy Regen has a base value of 100% when you check them in game. The recommended values below don't include the base value but rather show how much on top of it you need to obtain.

  • HP: 14000+

  • DEF: 1000+

  • Energy Regen: 0%

    • Yangyang doesn't need any energy generation rate to have her ultimate available enough for most teams to make use of her concerto effect when they need it.

    • But if you're playing Yangyang in teams that want to use her ultimate on cooldown or want to dedicate less field time to her perhaps only using her skill and Forte aerial plunge building some energy regeneation rate can assist with both of these.

Rotation

Below you can find optimal rotation (or rotations) for Yangyang. The total time needed to perform it is 6.92 seconds. When selecting the rotations we prioritized achieving 100 Concerto as fast as possible and once that condition was fulfilled, we focused on maximizing the damage output. As or if new and more optimal rotations are found, we'll update the characters calculations as needed.

When playing Yangyang as a support focus on achieving the following in combat:

  • Keep your Resonance Skill on cooldown at all times, unless its usage interrupts use of other higher priority cooldowns or DPS burst windows.
  • Always utilize Yangyang’s Ultimate as frequently as possible aside from saving it to Group-Up enemies at specific points of combat.
  • Use her Echo as frequently as possible asides from saving it for usage just before a burst combo when using Bell-Borne Echo, or alongside her Outro to buff one of your core DPS when using Impermanence Heron,
  • Utilize her Forte Gauge charges whenever filled to jump Aerial Plunge (not Heavy Aerial Plunge) to generate massive amounts of Concerto Energy. This can be Swap-Canceled to protect her during its long animation while saving field time.
  • Incase of spare field time or need to use her Concerto Gauge in a pinch, Yangyang can build additional Forte Gauge charges via Heavy Attacks or a full Basic Attack sequence to accelerate the process.

Additional information

The numbers below show the character's DPS (Damage Per Second) and DMG (total damage done). When selecting the rotations we prioritized achieving 100 Concerto as fast as possible and once that condition was fulfilled, we focused on maximizing the damage output. As or if new and more optimal rotations are found, we'll update the characters calculations as needed. Listed character calculations are done without buffs or any damage contribution from teammates (full solo). They only include what the character, their Weapon, Echo and gear are capable of during their ideal Burst or Concerto rotation when starting with their Intro and Resonance Liberation available.

Do note that DPS and DMG aren’t perfect metrics for a character’s individual value and should be taken with a grain of salt.Anything pertaining a character’s relevance in the meta is addressed in our Review and Tier List, which the numbers below shouldn’t be used for as an end-all-be-all to. Instead, DPS and DMG are good metrics for a character’s sequence value and comparison between an individual character’s different rotations. We recommend using those metrics for such purposes.
