Grim Pursuit - Rengokutsu Guide

Rengokutsu is one of the Grim Pursuit bosses. In this guide you will find tips how to deal with him!
Rengokutsu Overview
- Boss Name: Rengokutsu.
- Element: Odd.
- Challenge Type: Grim Pursuit.
- Difficulty Tiers: Nightmare → Hell → Inferno.
- Key Threats: Damage Taken Increase and Extra Attacks.
- Alternating Units Disadvantaged: The generic disadvantages apply against a weak Affinity, but Rengokutsu and his add-ons change their type multiple times during the fight.
Shell Drops
Here are the Shells dropped by the boss:

Skills Overview
Fire Blast
Rengokutsu scatters flames to deal 600% damage to a single enemy. When attacking an enemy with a countered Affinity, has a 100% chance to steal 20% Turn Meter.
How to counter?
- SPD buffs and Turn Meter buffs help offset the constant stealing of Turn Meter by the Boss. [Ave Maria] from Chiaki the Echo prevents Turn Meter Steal too!
Ascending Flame
Be consumed by raging flames! Rengokusatsu deals 600% damage to all enemies, ignoring 25% DEF; when attacking an elemental-weakness enemy, ignores 40% DEF and clears their Turn Meter. After casting, changes all allies' elements in the order: Reason > Odd > Hollow > Disorder > Constant.
How to counter?
- Focus HP more than DEF. The attack only becomes scary after multiple stacks of Debuff have been applied on your team.
Dark Desire
Passive. Each Time enemies of the same Affinity take a total of 4 turns, Rengokutsu deals 400% damage to those enemies and applies [Evil Fire]. Each stack of [Evil Fire] increases damage taken by 20%.
How to counter?
- Bring Units of as many different Affinity as possible. In the worst case, make sure that your DPS and squishies have a different Affinity than your faster units. Follow Up Attacks do not count towards the count.
Team Composition Tips
Rengokutsu is, in essence, not a complex or dangerous boss. What makes him scary is the steadily stacking Debuff that can turn his initially average damage into nukes way too heavy for your healer to handle. For that reason, like most of the Shell bosses, steady damage and healing outputs are key:
- Healer/Support - Most of the damage targets either 1 or 2 Units at once every turn, so prioritise supports that can target multiple Units regularly. Since the [Evil Fire] Debuff cannot be countered, there is no need for a cleanser. Instead, aim for big Heals/Shields.
- Sania andLingluo to name a few can keep up with the DPS of the boss.
- Vice is amazing if you’re not relying on multiple Constant affinity Animuses, acting as both a Healer and a Tank.
- Valerian still works, but ideally you would prefer a more offensive Support as Rengokutsu’s scaling during the fight is very oppressive.
- DPS - While the add-ons can be problematic, their presence isn’t all too bothersome so you can focus more on single target damage.
- Fangus andObol even though AoE oriented, are perfect for the job.
- Diting,Liliam,Rosa,Yeli are great examples of powerful Single Target DPS, but depend more on rng and/or good gear than the DoT spammers since the Affinity of the Boss matters more for them.
- Buffer - Turn Meter buffs, SPD buffs as well as other offensive buffs all work well here as there is no dispel and the fight is a race against the boss. Although they are not necessary in this fight, Offensive Debuffs like DEF- or DMG Taken Up can be crucial when it comes to improving your clear timer.
- As always, Lily fits almost any team thanks to her ability to make any DPS much stronger.
- Ninfoniel is amazing here too, her entire kit provides most of what you’re looking for in a Support for this fight other than Turn meter.
- Kloss,Gray,Dinah all bring offensive Debuffs while accomplishing multiple roles in the team.
- Marvell remains a contender, even though he’s somewhat lacking in offensive utility which can be punishing at Inferno difficulty.
- Tank -Lastly, as with all Shell bosses, Rengokutsu is vulnerable to [Taunt], which offers an excellent way of mitigating his AoE potential.
Best Teams
If you don't have some of the characters visible in the teams, you can replace them with another one that fulfills the same role (check the section above).
