When Lycaon completes charging during a Basic Attack, or activates a Dodge Counter or Dash Attack, the Daze inflicted by the skill is increased by 40%.

When EX Special Attack: Thrill of the Hunt, Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack, or Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz hits an enemy, the target's Ice RES is reduced by 25%, and increases the DMG to the target from other attributes by 30% for 30s.

Upon entering the battlefield, Lycaon gains one charge to enter the Encircle Prey state.

When Lycaon has a charge available for Encircle Prey, hitting an enemy with Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz triggers the Quick Assist of the previous character in the squad. During the skill, when other squad members enter the field via Quick Assist, Lycaon enters the Encircle Prey state for8s.

When an Elite or Boss-Rank enemy is Stunned, Lycaon gains one charge to enter the Encircle Prey state. Encircle Prey charges can be stored up to once.

When Encircle Prey ends, Lycaon automatically activates Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz. If Encircle Prey ends early, each remaining second increases the Daze of the next Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz by 6%.

When the currently active character stops attacking or activates a Chain Attack or Ultimate, Lycaon ends the Encircle Prey state early.

When Lycaon manually activates Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz, he also ends the Encircle Prey state early, but does not automatically activate Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz.

While in the Encircle Prey state, Lycaon performs Basic Attacks, Dodges, Dash Attacks, and Dodge Counters based on the currently active character's actions.

When the active character uses a Basic Attack or EX Special Attack, Lycaon simultaneously performs the 1st through 3rd hits of his Basic Attack.

When the active character uses a Dodge or Dodge Counter, Lycaon simultaneously performs a Dodge or Dodge Counter. After executing a Dodge Counter during Encircle Prey, Lycaon can immediately follow up with the 3rd hit of his Basic Attack.

While in the Encircle Prey state, skills activated by Lycaon when he is not the currently active Agent only deal DMG and Daze. When Lycaon is the currently active character, Encircle Prey's duration does not go down.

Ratings

This tier list assesses Agents (characters) based on their combat potential in Zenless Zone Zero’s most demanding contents - Deadly Assault (DA) and Shiyu Defense (SD). Please keep in mind Zenless Zone Zero is a skill-based game and each character has a different playstyle, difficulty level and even special tricks and combos. Zenless Zone Zero is also a team based game and it's only by combining both these factors to the highest level a character can reach optimal performance.

Endgame Modes

Pros & Cons
Pros

  • Very strong buff value, all the while having low EX Special costs (better enabling effects like King of the Summit) and strong Daze build.

  • Demands surprisingly little field time to perform and can adjust to fit team needs.

  • Standard Agent that’s easy to build and can work well with a variety of W-Engines, making him a strong and accessible pick.

  • Best housekeeping service in all of New Eridu.

Cons

  • Only thrives in Ice teams, limiting his flexibility as a Stunner.

  • Needs to be the one to initiate stuns, else he loses a significant portion of his value.

  • Strictly a buff/daze unit only, with no additional effects (e.g. Ultimate conversions, Decibel bonuses, stun extensions) to support his value.

  • Does not abide by child labor laws.

Review

Lycaon is an Ice Stun Agent who offers both competitive buffs and a significant amount of Daze build-up, being one of the best Stunner choices for Ice teams and - as of his Potential release - a decent alternative for all elements.

His main focus in battle is to use Assist Follow-Ups and EX Specials to apply debuffs to enemies, then be the one to initiate Stuns for a strong Stun DMG Multiplier increase. With Encircle Prey, he can continue to build Daze even without being the active character, needing to be swapped to only occasionally so as to expend resources as needed.

Core Passive & Additional Ability

Holding Basic on Lycaon will charge it. This is explained in more detail in the Basic Attack section, but as part of his Core Passive, fully completing a charge can increase the Daze dealt from the attack by 80%. This same bonus also applies passively to Dodge Counters and Dash Attacks.

This means that fully charging his Basics is always desirable, but this doesn’t need to be done manually, as when entering the battlefield, Lycaon gains an Encircle Prey stack. When using his enhanced Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz, this stack is consumed and Lycaon will trigger a reverse Quick Assist. If it’s used, after swapping he will remain on field, mirroring some of the active Agent’s attacks, dealing damage and Daze, but not building up Anomaly.

When the currently active character uses a Basic Attack or EX Special, Lycaon will do the charged version of his Basics 1 through to 3. He will copy Dodges and even Dodge Counters, the latter of which links into the 3rd hit of his Basic Attack string.

The Encircle Prey state lasts 8 seconds, and once it ends, Lycaon will automatically cast Glacial Waltz. Swapping to him will pause the timer, but certain skills will pre-emptively end the state:

  • If the active character stops attacking for an extended period.

  • If the active character activates a Chain Attack or Ultimate.

  • If Lycaon uses Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz.

The first 2 still lead to the automatic Glacial Waltz cast, but the last does not (as he is already using it manually). In situations where the state ends early, every second left will increase the Daze of the next Glacial Waltz by 6% to make up for the loss.

Lycaon then recovers a stack of Encircle Prey when Elite or Boss-Rank enemies are stunned, allowing for 1 use every stun cycle.

Working around Encircle Prey to maximise his Daze contribution is key, especially as with higher Potentials, his Basics, Dash Attacks and Dodge Counters get up to 15% increased Combat Impact when in the Encircle Prey state and not the active character.

On top of all this, Lycaon’s Core Passive inflicts a debuff on enemies when hitting with his EX Special or either of his Assist Follow-Ups, they suffer 25% Ice RES Shred and take 30% more DMG from all attacks (regardless of element).

His Additional Ability demands Anomaly, or same Attribute or Faction, and it causes stunned enemies hit by Lycaon to have a 35% increased Stun DMG Multiplier. This applies even if his Heavy Attack is what initiates stun, and in fact, doing so is important to maximise its uptime.

Basic Attack:

Lycaon only has one Basic Attack: Moon Hunter. This is a standard set of hits accessed by pressing his Basic button, but as mentioned previously, they can be charged.

Normally this is a 5-hit Physical DMG string, doing pitiful damage and Daze, but when the Basic Attack button is held down, he will charge up and deal Ice DMG instead, going through hits 1 through to 3 in a single charge. Holding the button again will then charge his Basic 4, and lastly his Basic 5. which distinguishes itself from others by having 2 charge levels (indicated by the flashing gem in his prosthetics).

Despite this having decent multipliers, the time to Daze ratio compared to other abilities makes it not worth using manually in most circumstances, with Encircle Prey being the primary way to access it.

Note that Lycaon’s charged Basic 1 can apply and break Freezes, so it can be tricky to work around at times.

Specials:

Lycaon’s regular Special Attack: Time to Hunt, isn’t all that remarkable, but it is a very quick skill. This can make it useful to trigger Chain Attacks and trigger Freezes, as his Basics may break it pre-emptively.

His EX Special Attack: Thrill of the Hunt however, is one of his primary ways to build Daze and Anomaly. It costs 40 Energy to activate, but holding down the Special button will charge it and consume 20 Energy to extend it, dealing just under 50% more damage and Daze.

It isn’t always worth using the extension, as the lower Energy cost uses can be more efficient, but it can be useful to push for a bit of extra Daze needed if near stuns so that Lycaon can be the one to initiate it.

As mentioned in his Core Passive, it can apply the Ice RES Shred and DMG Bonus debuffs on enemies when landing.

Dodge:

Dash Attacks - despite gaining Daze bonus from Lycaon’s Core Passive - are weak and best avoided, dealing Physical damage and having pitifully low Daze values.

Dodge Counter however, is quite good. It also benefits from the bonus, but deals Ice DMG, has good multipliers and is very fast in activation, making it great for certain fights (like Wandering Hunter) and an effective way to initiate stun on red flash attacks.

Assist:

Assists are key to Lycaon’s kit, being one of his main sources of Daze and the method to enter Encircle Prey.

Unlike most Agents, who use up 2 Assist Points per Defensive Assist against Elites and Bosses, Lycaon only uses up 1, making it much easier for him to generate Decibels and sustain Daze build through frequent Assist Follow-Ups, of which he has 2.

The standard one is Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack. It’s a remarkably fast skill and can be used during Encircle Prey without ending the state, making for an effective way to build Daze consistently.

The enhanced one is Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz. This is not only the way to enter Encircle Prey, but it also builds nearly 50% more Daze than the standard Assist Follow-Up. It is best avoided while in Encircle Prey so as to not end the state pre-emptively, but when outside of it, using it is the most accessible way for Lycaon to build Daze and apply the Ice RES Shred and DMG Bonus debuffs on enemies from his Core Passive.

Chain & Ultimate:

As far as Chain Attacks go, Lycaon’s is decently fast but rarely worth using, with only niche scenarios (such as for single Chain Attack combos in Hugo teams) enabling it.

His Ultimate is rather straightforward, being a quick and simple burst of Daze, but it’s noteworthy if only for having one of the highest single Daze multipliers in the entire game, with very few Agents (namely Qingyi) beating it. This means it’s a great way to speed through to stun quickly and will often initiate it, applying Lycaon’s Additional Ability.

How to play

Despite having the ability to charge his Basic Attacks, keeping Lycaon as the active character and manually using them tends to not be ideal. Considering how much Daze he can build with his Assist Follow-Ups, and how it is required to enter the Encircle Prey state and being the most accessible way to apply Lycaon’s RES Shred and DMG Bonus, it’s often ideal to sit on another character until an opportunity to parry presents itself.

Assist Follow-Up: Vengeful Counterattack - Glacial Waltz can then be used to consume to Encircle Prey charge and enter the state, after which he can be swapped out of and continue to build Daze and attack enemies.

If Daze and Decibels are needed, frequent parries back to Lycaon can be repeated - but make sure to not accidentally use the Glacial Waltz variant on Assist Follow-Ups unless ending Encircle Prey pre-emptively is needed.

As Energy builds up, it’s often worth using Lycaon’s EX Special Attack: Thrill of the Hunt for Daze and even some Anomaly build-up, as aligning Freeze timings for stuns can make a difference. This is true even for non-Freezeable enemies, owing to the CRIT DMG taken effect from Frostbite.

It’s not often good to charge Lycaon’s EX in full. Although its multipliers are proportional to the extra Energy cost, it’s not quite a 50% improvement and takes more time, so splitting up EX Specials across more uses tends to be better, while also having the added benefit of maintaining buffs (like King of the Summit).

As Stun approaches, make sure to open stun with Lycaon in some way to get the Stun DMG Multiplier increase, ideally with his EX Special for King of the Summit alignment.

Once Stun is over, a new Encircle Prey stack is built and the cycle repeats, with the occasional Ultimate use where needed. Note that Lycaon’s playstyle can change depending on the team, with characters like Miyabi, Hugo, Yidhari and others all having distinct adjustments to be made.

This can be in more precise management of Ice Anomaly build-up (important, as Encircle Prey attacks do not build any), having more frequent bouts of taking centre stage as the active character to make up for teammates that aren’t well suited to it, or stick to the standard, quick-swap Stunner playstyle.

So long as buffs/debuffs are maintained and stun breakpoints are met, Lycaon is a flexible unit that can adjust to the needs of the team.

Best W-Engines

The W-Engines are listed in order of priority. Sometimes the percentages appearing near them won't reflect their performance as pure damage or Stun output isn't the only thing we're looking at - the utility of the W-Engine might be more important than the calculations imply.

The top number shows the performance of the W-Engine when applying Daze while the bottom number when dealing Damage.

Team-buffed calculations

The W-Engine calculations below are team-buffed calculations and here's the team we used for them:

Upon launching a Quick Assist or Perfect Assist, the equipper's Impact increases by 25/28.75/32.5/36.25/40% for 8s. When the equipper launches and hits an enemy with a Basic Attack, apply Wilt to the target for 30s, stacking up to 20 times, repeated triggers reset the duration. When any squad member hits an enemy, for every stack of Wilt applied to the target, the CRIT DMG of the Ice DMG and Fire DMG dealt by that attack increases by 1.5/1.72/1.95/2.17/2.4%. Only one of this effect can be active at a time in the same squad.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 713

Blazing Laurel is the de facto best option for Lycaon. It has a ridiculous amount of Impact % bonuses and can be activated on Defensive Assists, which leads to Assist Follow-Ups that are among Lycaon's main source of Daze application. The buffs from it are among the strongest for Fire and Ice teams and easy enough to upkeep, especially with Potentials active as Encircle Prey's Basic Attacks count for it.

As far as Daze goes, Fossilized Core is among the best, all the while being a highly accessible option. It's all that it offers, but it offers plenty of it, being especially strong early in fights, helping meet stun breakpoints. Note that performance will vary based on score, with the Top Value representing its output for enemies above 75% HP and the Bottom Value averaged for those below it.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 594
Energy Regen (Lv 60): 50%
Steam Oven requires more active Energy management by players to get full Daze value out of it, and even then it can fall behind other options, but the Energy Regen it provides is very helpful. EX Specials are useful for King of the Summit upkeep, are one of Lycaon's primary sources of Daze, Anomaly and Decibel generation. Steam Oven is the most effective W-Engine to sustain constant EX Special uses, making it the best non-limited option in most circumstances if used properly.
Usage: 20.89%
Shiyu Defense: 28900
Deadly Assault: 29359

When off-field, the equipper's Energy Regen increases by 0.6/0.75/0.9/1.05/1.2 per second. When using an EX Special Attack, the equipper's Impact is increased by 10/12.5/15/17.5/20% for 10s, stacking up to 2 times. The duration of each stack is calculated separately.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 684
Impact (Lv 60): 18%
Hellfire Gears offers competitive Impact gains, and as Lycaon has the option to spend only 40 Energy per EX Special, it's easier for him than most to maintain its stacks. Unfortunately, when his Potential is in play, Encircle Prey counts as being "on-field", meaning that its Energy Regen effects do not contribute much. It's an option if Daze is required late in fights where Fossilized Core isn't enough, but it will often fall behind Steam Oven in both Daze and sustain.
Usage: 16.33%
Shiyu Defense: 27696
Deadly Assault: 28463

100.00%

When an attack hits an enemy, DMG and Daze from Basic Attacks increase by 6/7.5/9/10.5/12% for 8s, stacking up to 5 times. This effect can trigger at most once during each skill. The duration of each stack is calculated separately.

Base ATK (Lv 60): 684
Impact (Lv 60): 18%
Lycaon's Signature, The Restrained, is surprisingly a terrible option for him. The majority of Lycaon's Daze comes from Defensive Assists, Assist Follow-Ups and EX Specials, none of which benefit from its Daze increase. The stack duration is short and calculated separately, making it difficult to maintain full uptime of it, even with Encircle Prey easing this requirement. Almost any other Stunner W-Engine will be better for Daze and/or resources, making this a suboptimal pick that is best avoided.

Provides the highest Daze output of any Disk Drive set in the game. However, the difference between the 4-piece effect increase in Daze is marginal compared to simply using the 2-piece effect, meaning it almost always yields better results to use a supportive set like King of the Summit or Astral Voice to buff your team further, instead of the extra Daze which only gives extra Stun windows against bosses in very specific situations. If an extra Stun window is enabled by using this set it will perform the best, however this only very rarely happens, causing it to be left behind in favour of other sets.

Calculations

Damage
New Calculations

ZZZ has changed a lot from 1.0 - many new mechanics, enemies characters have been introduced and biggest of all the game has a new competitive endgame mode Deadly Assault. Deadly Assault is based around dealing as much damage as possible in 180 seconds, because of this we're changing our calculation style away from a focus on burst to instead focus on extended fights over 3 minutes (180s). Also, many Mindscapes, Disc Drive and W-engine calculations can meaningfully change when factoring in the buffs of an Agents best team, for this reason we're also adding a new feature, allowing you to see damage output with one of the agents best teams buffs factored in.

Mindscape Notes
  • M1 - Mildly useful to meet stun breakpoints, but does demand spreading out of EX Special casts to get the full benefit.
  • M2 - Very useful effect that helps Lycaon recover Energy between Stuns. With this, try to make it so that Lycaon is initiating stuns and triggering Chains - ideally not at the same time - to maximise Energy gain.
  • M4 - This has very little practical application, as Lycaon isn’t likely to be the active character. May have some use in Encircle Prey, but only if Dodges are not used.
  • M6 - No significant benefit to any of his teams, but does better enable a “main DPS” Lycaon playstyle.
Team-buffed calculations

The W-Engine calculations below are team-buffed calculations and here's the team we used for them:

Lycaon in 1 Target scenario [Mindscape Calculations]

Rotation time: consistent DPS over 180s.

Lycaon in 1 Target scenario [Potential Calculations]

Rotation time: consistent DPS over 180s.

Details about the calculations

And here are the W-Engines and Disk Drives used in the calculations.
